"Innisfree Village is a voluntary lifesharing community with adults with intellectual disabilities. Our mission is to provide a lifesharing home and work environment in an atmosphere of beauty, warmth, and respectfulness. All community members are valued, and all are encouraged to explore and contribute to a meaningful and challenging life."
Innisfree Village was founded in 1971 by a group of parents in Maryland who were searching for a progressive alternative to institutional care for their children with intellectual disabilities. Adults with disabilities, known as “coworkers”, live in family-style homes with volunteer caregivers and work side-by-side with them in a variety of activities. Located on 550 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Albemarle County, the community includes 15 residential homes and several therapeutic workstations. The workstations include organic gardens and farms producing vegetables, fruits, flowers, herbs, eggs, meat and wool. Other workstations are the woodshop and the weavery which create high quality, beautiful and useful products like cutting boards, wooden utensils, scarves and placemats that are sold at several area markets and at craft fairs throughout the year. The bakery produces granola and bread, and the kitchen provides nutritious, tasty meals for the community.
There are also many opportunities for recreation including horseback riding, music, pottery, and a variety of sports. Now in their fortieth year, Innisfree is happy to share with the local community as the First Fridays featured artist at C'ville Arts.
